Usually when irritability strikes, it can sound like this:
“I hate my moods, they never ask my permission to change.”
“If it weren’t for my mood swings, I wouldn’t get any exercise at all.”
These tongue in cheek quotes capture the essence of the stereotypical (according to society) menopausal woman and the symptoms that accompany this time in her life.
Prior to that last period that determines that you are in fact in menopause - the stage known as perimenopause - your estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone drop. The onset of perimenopause usually begins in the early forties and is diagnosed by eliminating other health conditions. It can last up to 10 years. Menopause, having gone 12 months without a menstruation, can happen in your 40s or 50s, but the average age is 51 in the United States.
Mood swings are common during times of hormonal imbalance, including PMS, perimenopause, and menopause. And each accompanying symptom has varying degrees of intensity. For example, the irritability of a perimenopausal woman may range from constantly snapping at others to “simply” being annoyed.
An effective pharmacological approach to treating these symptoms has traditionally involved hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Approximately 6 million women in the U.S. take estrogen supplements and progestin therapy, most commonly in the form of tablets. Estrogen tablets are the most common hormonal replacement therapy for mood swings, although there are possible side effects including bloating, breast swelling and tenderness, headaches, vaginal bleeding, and nausea.
The challenge to treating the symptom of irritability or mood swings, is to find an optimal way of overriding that sensation with a positive emotional response. The menopausal transition is a natural biological process. But the physical symptoms (such as hot flashes) as well as the emotional symptoms (such as mood swings) may disrupt your sleep, lower your energy, or mess with your emotional health.
Complementary to HRT or standing on its own are very effective treatments that involve lifestyle adjustments, alternative medicine, and supplements.
Lifestyle adjustments include proper nutrition and regular exercise. Adhere to a well-balanced diet consisting of foods rich in essential macronutrients (complex carbs, lean protein, and healthy fats) and the following nutrients (and use our app to know which applies best to which symptom):
Phytoestrogens are plant estrogenic compounds that act as the body's own estrogen to balance hormone levels and naturally relieve symptoms of an imbalance (soy, flax, tomatoes, alfalfa, barley, apples)
-
Omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial for treating mood swings as parts of various mental health conditions, including mood disorders and depression (fish, chia seeds, spinach, wild rice, sacha inchi seeds)
-
Tryptophan is a neurotransmitter that plays a role in mood regulation and whose low levels have been linked to depression (eggs, salmon, cheese, soy, chicken, peanuts)
-
Magnesium is an important mineral for brain health and mood swings treatment, and its deficiency might make women more prone to depressive moods (fish, nuts, seeds, beans, dark leafy green vegetables)
Regular exercise helps to reduce stress, balance mood, and reduce anxiety, while also triggering the release of hormones, like serotonin and dopamine.
